Keeping the Basics of Poker in Mind
A lot of the problems and difficulties that arise when you play Poker is due to the fact that most tend to focus on the complex issues and forgetting the fundamentals. The fact is that by adhering to the basics you will encounter fewer difficult situations.
First and foremost is that of the Poker starting hand. It is true that people spend too much time obsessing over their ranking and their so called values. However, while the ranking and worthiness of the cards are subject to question, the cards that are playable is not.
What this means is that regardless of whether you are playing No Limit or Limit, you will still play premium hands (AA-JJ), suited connectors, pocket pairs, connectors etc. Of course you must know the different circumstances in which they are to be played. For example, in full ring games, you play premium hands strongly at pre flop; raise them to take the pot or steal the blinds when in a tourney.
If you are in a multi way pot, play the drawing hands like connectors and pocket pairs. These Poker hands can be very profitable in those situations; with shorthand games you play Ace or King high hands.
If a lot of players simply played these hands in their proper context, their games would flow more smoothly.
The other basic Poker issue is that of position. It isn't enough for you to know that being last to act is the best place to be in, and being the first to act is the worst. If you want to avoid complications, you must also know how to play when in the cutoff, in middle position etc.
Another fundamental aspect of Poker worth considering is your location relative to the tight or aggressive player. If you are to the left of the aggressive player, you can use your spot to re raise your opponent with all sorts of hands. You do this, and you will stand to make more money. If he is to your right, then raise with good hands only.
The reverse Poker strategy should be used when you are to the left of the weak tight player. You should try and raise him anytime and at every opportunity you can.
A lot of the thorny situations that Poker players often find themselves in can be attributed to their lack of understanding or ability to factor in these basic aspects of the game. Take some time to learn how to properly play these situations, and you will save yourself a lot of trouble later on.
